Packaged wastewater treatment systems are premanufactured for decentralized wastewater treatment systems in smaller communities. SSI Aeration, Inc. designs and manufactures these systems for wastewater treatment facilities, helping them save on space, energy and operating costs to enhance their bottom lines.
Types of Packaged Wastewater Treatment Systems
SSI Aeration, Inc. offers two types of packaged wastewater treatment systems:
MBBR
Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) systems are well-suited for applications that require compact, low-cost solutions. Instead of mechanical or chemical methods, these systems treat wastewater using biological processes, such as microorganisms like nematodes and bacteria. The microorganisms decompose the organic matter or impurities in wastewater, transforming them into simpler substances that are easier to filter out of the water.
MBBR systems achieve this process through plastic carriers coated with biofilm to remove organic waste. This biological process is often used before and after other treatment processes that focus on different aspects of water treatment, such as disinfection and grit removal.
Since they are packaged wastewater treatment systems, MBBR systems are compact for decentralized plants with limited space. These systems are also highly efficient, thanks to their high hydraulic capacity, and are environmentally friendly since they rely on microorganisms instead of chemicals.
IFAS
Integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) is a wastewater treatment technology that attaches growth media to activated sludge tanks to add biofilm carriers to specific zones. This process removes organic waste by working with mixed liquor-suspended solids (MLSS) and a nitrifying population to oxidize the nitrogenous substances.
These IFAS packaged wastewater treatment systems can be retrofitted onto existing activated sludge systems, making them suitable for decentralized facilities. Wastewater treatment plants can increase their capacity without requiring a significant amount of additional space. IFAS systems are also eco-friendly as they don’t require substantial amounts of energy for efficient wastewater treatment.
Advantages of Packaged Wastewater Treatment Systems
SSI Aeration, Inc.’s packaged wastewater treatment systems offer several benefits:
- Compact designs: Since decentralized wastewater treatment facilities are usually found in smaller communities, they often have limited space. Packaged wastewater treatment systems have compact designs, helping these facilities maintain their productivity despite these space limitations.
- Easy installation and maintenance: Packaged wastewater treatment systems are pre-engineered, making them easy to set up and retrofit onto current structures. These systems also don’t require much maintenance, saving facilities additional time and resources.
- Scalable and flexible configurations: These premanufactured wastewater treatment systems are easy to assemble and disassemble as a facility’s needs evolve. They can be scaled up if a wastewater treatment plant’s capacity needs to increase.
- Enhanced efficiency: Packaged wastewater treatment systems work faster than alternative systems. For example, MBBR systems have a low hydraulic retention time (HRT) of about three to four hours.
Applications of Packaged Wastewater Treatment Systems
Since packaged wastewater treatment systems are commonly found in smaller communities closer to the source of wastewater, they mainly treat biodegradable organic waste, such as:
- Food
- Soap
- Human waste
- Silt
- Metals
- Gas
- Detergents
- Phosphorus
- Nitrogen
Within smaller communities, packaged wastewater treatment systems may be used for:
- Military bases
- Power plants
- Construction or mining sites
- School campuses
- Government compounds
- Mobile home parks
- Housing subdivision
Considerations When Choosing a Packaged Wastewater Treatment System
Consider these essential factors before selecting a wastewater system:
- Capacity: Since MBBR and IFAS systems work faster than traditional wastewater treatment systems, it’s essential to ensure the facility can handle the increased capacity of treated water.
- Energy efficiency: Choose an energy-efficient packaged wastewater treatment system that aligns with current and future energy consumption and sustainability goals. MBBR and IFAS systems rely on biofilm carriers instead of mechanical and chemical methods, making them more energy-efficient and sustainable.
- Local regulations: Be sure to select a system that meets local regulations and industry standards. SSI Aeration, Inc. is ISO 9001:2015 certified with TUV Rheinland of North America, Inc., ensuring all our systems meet the highest industry standards.
